Out toward the eastern side of Upper Bidwell Park, Monkey Face rises out of the hills in a way that’s hard to miss once you know where to look.
The basalt formation gets its name from the way its shape resembles a monkey’s face from certain angles.
The hike out here feels a little more adventurous than many of the park’s lower trails, with open hillsides and wide views along the way.
Many locals make the trip in the evening to catch the sunset, when the foothills light up and Upper Park feels especially peaceful.
