Three Sisters Landmark

Just steps from the Rose Garden behind Trinity Hall, the Three Sisters stand as one of the most powerful pieces of public art on the California State University, Chico campus. Created in the early 1990s by visiting artist Deborah Masters, the sculpture features three women cast in concrete, each rising more than nine feet tall.

Inspired by Anton Chekhov’s play The Three Sisters, the figures represent layered human traits, strength, vulnerability, and uncertainty.

Originally conceived while Masters was a visiting artist at Chico State during the 1990–91 academic year, the Three Sisters have since become a campus landmark. Students meet here between classes, grads take photos here in caps and gowns, and visitors often pause longer than they expect. It’s art you move around, not just past.

Pair it with a stroll through the nearby Rose Garden and you’ve got one of the most artful corners of campus.
