The Llano Seco Unit is 1,732 acres of wetlands and grasslands perfect for observing wildlife up close, part of the Steve Thompson North Central Valley Wildlife Management Area. While there are large flocks of wintering waterfowl toward the end of the year that are worth the trip all on their own, there are also bald eagles, greater sandhill cranes, Swainson’s hawks, and a host of airborne and ground-based endangered species. With a half-mile walking trail and multiple observation platforms, the Llano Seco Unit’s public-use Sanctuary II is perfect for wildlife observers and photographs of any age.
