Spring is when the park really shows off. Hillsides fill with lupine, poppies, and buttercups, turning into a wildflower display.
Want to learn what you’re looking at? Join a guided wildflower hike with CARD naturalists, who lead seasonal hikes through Upper Park and share the stories behind the plants, wildlife, and geology of the canyon.
Or, the Mount Lassen chapter of the California Native Plant Society hosts regular field trips to the park’s best bloom spots.
Chico Beyond Adventure does group hikes with routes that change depending on what’s blooming and how the canyon is showing up that week.
It’s the perfect time of year to tackle longer hikes that feel a little more ambitious once summer heat rolls in. Our hiking guide is full of trails that get real showy in the spring.
Bring along a wildflower guide to help identify what you’re seeing.
Step into a real-life fantasy at the Spring Fae Festival, Chico’s own free Ren Faire-style celebration.
Expect fairy wings, dragons, knights, and flower crowns, with plenty of people dressed for the occasion.
More than 60 local vendors sell handmade goods and art, while turkey legs, live music, and roaming actors bring the world of the Fae to life.

Wildflower Music Festival
A Chico spring staple, the Wildflower Music Festival fills Community Park with a full day of music, food, and community fun.
Blankets dot the lawn, kids dance through the grass, and guitars echo across the park.
Expect local food vendors, beer and wine, a kids’ area with crafts and activities, plus raffles packed with local goods.
This year’s lineup includes The Brothers Comatose, with Wolfthump drumming between sets.
As the evenings warm up, head to Downtown Chico for LIVE on the Lawn, a free, family-friendly concert series that turns Children's Park into an outdoor venue.
Held every Saturday in May, this series showcases a rotating lineup of bands from across the North State, covering everything from soulful Americana to rhythmic Latin-Rock.
It’s the perfect "golden hour" activity: grab a blanket, order some takeout from a nearby downtown business, and enjoy music under the trees.
When the sun sets, Upper Park gets even more magical.
Join one of CARD’s guided night hikes led by naturalists, where hikers set out at twilight as the stars begin appearing overhead.
Chico’s clear skies make constellations easy to spot, and along the way you’ll learn about the park’s wildlife and geology.
While you’re up there, stop by the Chico Community Observatory. Public viewing nights are always free, with different sky highlights depending on the evening. Check the schedule to see what’s in view.

Before the summer heat demands misting systems, Chico enjoys a sweet spot of perfect patio weather.
For something relaxed, grab a table at Grana, where the patio is lush and green and a bottle of natural wine pairs perfectly with seasonal plates featuring fresh ingredients like asparagus and spinach.
If you’re in the mood for something rowdier, the Bear's patio has a habit of turning casual drinks into full-on dance parties.
A good excuse to get outside and move. Bidwell Run Club takes you through some of the most scenic parts of the park while building community along the way.
With multiple meetups each week, from longer runs to more approachable group options, it’s easy to find your pace.
You can drop in whenever it works for you, whether you’re visiting Chico or live here year-round. It’s an easy way to meet people, stay motivated, and experience the park in a new way. Check out their calendar to get involved.

Spring also means baby animals!
Round up your friends, family, or playgroup and book a tour at Two by Two, where visitors can meet farm animals and learn about life on a working ranch.
Baby goats are usually the highlight, and some guests even get the chance to help bottle-feed newborns.
When the Thursday Night Market returns in April, it feels like Chico officially shifts into outdoor season.
Downtown streets close to traffic and turn into one big community block party filled with farmers, food vendors, artisan goods, and live music on nearly every corner.
Grab something delicious, run into a few friends, and end the night with dinner on a patio downtown.
From cozy Airbnbs tucked along Bidwell Park with beautiful canyon views to comfortable hotels with pools perfect for cooling off after a day of exploring, Chico offers plenty of places to settle in.
