– Chico State
Chico is a charming California city shaped by its natural surroundings in the northern Sacramento Valley, below Lassen National Park, and between the Mendocino and Tahoe National Forests.
Known for its nature, culture, and higher education, Chico also offers a growing number of wheelchair-friendly experiences, making it a welcoming destination for locals and visitors alike.
Bidwell Park is a 3,670-acre sparkling emerald, traversing directly through the heart of Chico to the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve just outside of city limits.
The park consists of Lower and Upper Bidwell; Lower Bidwell offers the easiest terrain and the most amenities, while Upper Bidwell provides a sprinkling of standout points worth exploring. Park Map →
Lower Bidwell Park
Lower Bidwell Park is a lush forest, a canopy of towering Oak and Sycamore Trees—radiant in the fall, rejuvenating in the spring, mystical in the winter, healing in the summer, and always inspiring.
It is exceptional for its five to six miles of paved trails and five to seven miles of naturally firm paths that meander throughout its nearly level terrain, sometimes along or over Big Chico Creek.
Petersen Memorial Way and South Park Drive are smoothly paved park roads that are open to everyone, pedestrians, wheelchairs, strollers, cyclists, etc., and closed to cars on weekends and holidays.
A low speed limit keeps traffic pedestrian-friendly. Along South Park Drive, numerous picnic tables are accessible on paved or naturally firm surfaces, often with adjacent parking and raised barbecues.
ADA restrooms are available in Lower Bidwell, but not everywhere. A few recommended locations include the One-Mile Recreation Area, Cedar Grove Picnic Area, and Chico Creek Nature Center.
Paved pathways parallel the Sycamore Pool swimming hole at the One-Mile Recreation Area. A ramp leads into the water at the end of the pool, where it intersects with Big Chico Creek; other entrances have steps.
Find accessible restrooms conveniently by this ramp and ADA parking throughout the area.
Caper Acres, situated near the Sycamore Pool, is an elaborate play area for children. Based on online research, it features a few modifications, including step-free rubber surfaces, partially shaded areas, and adaptive equipment such as a castle and a ship.
Upper Bidwell Park
Upper Bidwell Park is an ideal environment for birdwatching, stargazing, and viewing iconic Monkey Face Rock.
Chico Community Observatory is a special feature of Upper Bidwell Park. Lectures take place around the outdoor circular amphitheater, and telescopes are brought out onto the surrounding paved area to observe the stars.
An accessible portable toilet is by the parking area if needed.
One accessible paved parking spot is next to the observatory. Directly in front is a short, crushed-rock path leading to a smooth metal dock with a few lowered rails, providing unobstructed fishing and viewing of Horseshoe Lake and Monkey Face Rock.
The one-way Upper Park Road trailhead begins between the Observatory and the final parking lot at a gated road and parallels Big Chico Creek and the S. Rim Trail.
It’s open to pedestrians, and the entrance is wide enough for power wheelchairs to pass through.
Chico Seed Orchard
Chico Seed Orchard is a quaint and beloved outdoor space where a one-mile loop trail winds through the trees and over Lindo Channel Creek.
Like Lower Bidwell Park, it’s adorned with vegetation and overlapping canopies, making it an ideal habitat for birdwatching.
The trail is fully paved, firm, and mostly level, providing dependable access for both manual and power wheelchairs.
A few short gravel side paths branch off the main loop; these are generally well-maintained but may feel softer after rain.
Find an accessible, van-friendly parking space located at the main entrance, beside the pedestrian gate; however, the turning radius in this area can be tight for larger power chairs.
During weekdays, the main gate remains open, allowing vehicles to continue to the trailhead near the nature center, where two additional accessible parking spaces are available, including one van-accessible spot.
Trail Note: Keep in mind that trails with natural surfaces may become saturated and muddy during the rainy season, so plan accordingly.
