Trail Essentials: Know Before You Go

Bidwell Park is a rugged, wild landscape. To ensure a great visit, keep these local tips in mind:

  • Water is Key: There are no water fountains in Upper Park. Bring at least 1 liter of water per hour of hiking, especially during the summer.

  • Beat the Heat: During the summer months, plan to be off the trails by 10:00 AM. Temperatures on the rocky rims often exceed 100°F. Bring a hat and sunscreen.

  • Use tick repellent: Especially in spring and early summer, and check yourself after hiking.

  • Share the Trail: You are in a natural habitat for rattlesnakes and mountain lions. Stay on marked trails, keep dogs on a leash where required, and always yield to horses.

  • Trail Etiquette: Hikers yield to horses; mountain bikers yield to both hikers and horses. A friendly "hello" goes a long way!

  • Check trail conditions: Look up closures, reviews, and recent trail updates on AllTrails or local park pages before you go.

  • Practice Leave No Trace: Pack in and pack out, tread lightly, and leave the environment better than you found it.

Relax & Refuel

Once the hike is done, the day doesn’t have to be!

After tackling volcanic ridges, or even squeezing in a short loop around One Mile, Chico’s patios and gathering spots are the perfect place to wind down.
