Bidwell Park is a rugged, wild landscape. To ensure a great visit, keep these local tips in mind:
Water is Key: There are no water fountains in Upper Park. Bring at least 1 liter of water per hour of hiking, especially during the summer.
Beat the Heat: During the summer months, plan to be off the trails by 10:00 AM. Temperatures on the rocky rims often exceed 100°F. Bring a hat and sunscreen.
Use tick repellent: Especially in spring and early summer, and check yourself after hiking.
Share the Trail: You are in a natural habitat for rattlesnakes and mountain lions. Stay on marked trails, keep dogs on a leash where required, and always yield to horses.
Trail Etiquette: Hikers yield to horses; mountain bikers yield to both hikers and horses. A friendly "hello" goes a long way!
Check trail conditions: Look up closures, reviews, and recent trail updates on AllTrails or local park pages before you go.
Practice Leave No Trace: Pack in and pack out, tread lightly, and leave the environment better than you found it.
Once the hike is done, the day doesn’t have to be!
After tackling volcanic ridges, or even squeezing in a short loop around One Mile, Chico’s patios and gathering spots are the perfect place to wind down.
