Chico exists as a yin-yang: a world-class university woven into a spirited, soulful city. Academic energy fuels the culture, and the local community gives the campus its heartbeat.
Whether you’re here for a weekend or a lifetime, this is how to experience Chico as the college town it truly is.
Focus your first day on the easy flow between downtown and campus. In Chico, they are not separate worlds.
You can grab coffee on a historic corner and be crossing Big Chico Creek on campus five minutes later. Brick storefronts turn into tree lined paths, and students, families, and longtime residents all share the same sidewalks.
Fuel Up at a Community Hub
Start your morning where the locals do.
Stoble Coffee serves modern coffee in a three story space with a rooftop overlooking downtown. It is a go-to meeting place for students, professors, creatives, and Chico natives.
Or head to Naked Lounge, a true community hub since the early 2000s. Expect art on the walls, live music, and folks busking with guitars out front.
The Historic Stroll
From there, make your way to campus and walk through the George Petersen Rose Garden. Cross the nine iconic pedestrian bridges over Big Chico Creek and take in the sycamores, open lawns, and creekside paths that define the arboretum feel of the university.
Many students will tell you the beauty of this campus is exactly why they chose to go to Chico State.
If you can, schedule one of the admissions tours offered throughout the year to see how nature and academics are intentionally integrated here.
A Classic Chico Lunch
For a quintessential Chico college experience, grab lunch at Madison Bear Garden.
A student and alumni staple since the 1970s, its walls are layered with decades of Wildcat history, including polaroids from generations of undergrads who passed through before you. It is a rite of passage.
Come back late night for DJ's and dancing to catch the campus nightlife scene in full swing.
If you are craving something a little more elevated, B Street Public House is just steps from campus. Go for the trashy chicken tacos, the kimchi reuben, or one of their open faced sourdough sandwiches on local Camina bread.
Afternoon Exploration
Spend the afternoon moving through downtown with no real rush. Step inside the shops and treat yourself to something uniquely Chico.
Pick up locally designed gear at Upper Park Clothing to rep your love for our regions natural beauty. Browse the racks at Bootleg, where the owner, Sue, has earned her title as the queen of vintage in Chico. And if you need a reset, stop into Live Life Juice Co. for one of the cold pressed juices locals swear by.
As you wander, notice the small details. The murals tucked between brick buildings, the public art blended into sidewalks and benches, the layers of history and creativity throughout downtown. Chico rewards the observant.
Dinner & A NIGHT OUT
Start your evening at Grana, where farm to fork is not a trend, it is how Chico eats. You can often find Jeff, the owner, at the Saturday Farmers Market sourcing produce and building menu ideas around whatever is in season.
What our local growers are harvesting that week is likely what is showing up on your plate.
Then, if you want to experience the town like a true Wildcat, keep the fun going.
Catch a show at The Argus Bar + Patio, where live music lives and the energy feels unmistakably downtown. Or head to Crazy Horse Saloon for a mechanical bull ride, a defining Chico college experience.
A thoughtful dinner, then boots on the dance floor.
ARGUS BAR + PATIO
Dedicate your second day to the wider Chico landscape, from the university’s innovative farm to the depth and beauty of Bidwell Park.
The Recovery Ritual
After a wild night out, brunch is non negotiable.
Head to Cafe Coda, a staple with one of the best patios in town. Their menu is fresh and ingredient-driven, lighter than classic diner fare but still satisfying.
Order the chilaquiles (trust us), and if the weekend calls for it, try the Purple Rain with strawberry lemonade and champagne.
Or head to Mom's, right across from campus and a longtime weekend ritual for students and locals alike. For more than 15 years, they’ve been incorporated into countless Chico mornings for a reason.

Agriculture in Action
Chico runs on agriculture. Everything else grows from there.
If your visit falls on a Saturday, head straight to the farmer's market. It is the heartbeat of the community. If you want to truly 'see' Chico, this is where you go. Walk it slowly. Ask questions. Taste what is in season.
Then take that experience one step deeper with a short drive to the Jay Gilbert Farm Store at the Chico State University Farm. The products are largely student grown, student raised, and student managed.
The University Farm is not separate from Chico’s food culture. Restaurants cook with it, breweries collaborate with it, and campus dining showcases it.
Even if agriculture is not your thing, standing out in the fields makes it clear how deeply the university and the community are intertwined.
The Bidwell Adventure
You cannot visit Chico without experiencing Bidwell Park. It is not just a park to us residents, it is our backyard.
It is tied into everyday life here, whether that means biking through it on the way to work or taking a midday walk between classes. How you explore it depends on your mood!
Keep it simple with a paved stroll through Lower Park near One Mile, shaded by sycamores and lined with open green space. You will hear birds in the canopy, see families picnicking, and students with hammocks strung between trees.
If you are craving something more rugged, head into Upper Park.
Gain a little elevation, feel the terrain shift beneath your feet, and take in iconic views like Monkey Face. The iron basalt formations past Yahi Trail and the dirt paths up there remind you how wild this place really is.

Visit Our Breweries & TAPROOMS
Spend a couple hours at Sierra Nevada Brewing for a guided tour. Walking through the brewery, seeing historic photos of Ken Grossman’s journey, and understanding how our small town helped launch a craft beer legacy is a must do.
It is one of Chico’s crown jewels and a foundational piece of our identity.
Or, visit Farmers Brewing Company. Founded by a multi generation farming family based out of Princeton just outside Chico, they grow rice on their own land and incorporate it directly into their beer. It is local roots in a glass.
In 2025, they brewed with peaches sourced from the University Farm, and the owner’s daughter is an agriculture student working on that very land. It is a full circle Chico story!
Grab a seat in the taproom and pair your pint with bratwurst, sauerkraut sandwiches, or a hearty burger.
Chico is proof that a city and a university can exist in pure harmony. It’s that balance of energy and ease that makes this the ultimate college town. We hope you find your flow with us soon!
