Weekends in Chico: Farmers Markets, Bidwell Hikes, and Local Rhythms

(Originally published )

Chico weekends are built around a few constants. Time outside, community events, live music, and good food or drinks.

Everything is close, so you can move from green space to downtown without thinking about it. This is how us locals do a good weekend.

START WITH COFFEE
A lot of Chico weekends start the same way: coffee with a friend before deciding what comes next.

Maybe it’s rooftop sunshine at Stoble, maybe a quick stop at NALO to see the downtown buskers outside, maybe a tucked neighborhood favorite like Tender Loving.

Everyone has their go-to order and their go-to spot. Half the fun is finding yours!

SWING BY THE MARKET
Saturday mornings in Chico belong to the Chico Certified Farmers Market. It’s the heartbeat of the community and one of those weekly rituals that never gets old.

Even if you aren’t shopping for groceries, there’s plenty to discover! Woodworkers, silversmiths, jewelry makers, and booths full of things you didn’t know you needed until you saw them.

You’re bound to leave with something (probably multiple) before the morning is over.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE
In Chico, experiencing the outdoors isn’t an occasional activity. It’s part of everyday life!

One of the largest municipal parks in the country, Bidwell Park, offers everything from rugged canyon trails to shady creekside paths.

Head to Upper Park for mountain biking, hiking, basalt cliffs, and wild terrain. Spend time in Lower Park for tree-lined paths and easy walks close to downtown.

When the weather heats up, locals head to the Sacramento River.

Float with friends, kayak, or bring a picnic and set up along the banks for a slow afternoon in the sun.

Keep an eye out for blue herons, osprey nests, and bald eagles that remind you how close Chico is to wild places.

COMMUNTIY EVENTS
Chico knows how to gather!

Throughout the year, weekends are filled with community events that make it easy to drop in and feel connected. Wildflower Music Festival at Community Park, Lunar Market, bike events, outdoor concerts, and pop up markets all bring folks together.

Some are family-friendly, some lean late night, many are free, and all feel welcoming.

CRUISE AROUND
Chico is a bike town. It’s one of the easiest ways to get around and see how everything connects.

Ride shaded, bright green paths through Lower Bidwell Park, cruise past storefronts downtown, and follow routes that weave neighborhoods and parks together.

Don’t have a bike? Rent one from Greenline or North Rim and you’re set.

DINE OUTSIDE
Again, in Chico, we live life outdoors. When it’s time to refuel, grabbing a seat on a patio is the move.

There’s a patio for every mood. Go lush and elevated at Grana with a glass of natural wine, grab a seat at The Rawbar for sushi and downtown energy or keep it lively at Tres Hombres, with tacos and tequila.

WANDER DOWNTOWN
One of the best things about Chico is how naturally everything flows. The market sits right next to historic downtown, so once you’ve finished browsing, you’re only a block away from local shops and restaurants.

Find fine jewelry at Amy Waltz, one-of-a-kind vintage gems at Bootleg, and plenty of other unique spots along the way.

A NIGHT OUT
When evening rolls around, you’ve got options.

Head to Meriam Park if you want something easy and social. Live music at The Barn, a cocktail at Roselle, dinner with friends, then a cone from Savor Ice Cream to close it out. Everything’s within walking distance, we’re talking a few hundred feet, so you don’t have to think too hard about it.

Or stay downtown, where the night feels a little more edgy. Music spills out of bars, and it’s easy to bounce from one spot to the next.

If you’re up for a crowd, head to Duffy’s Tavern, the kind of dive where Friday nights mean live music, spinning records and lots of dancing!

A lot of spots around town keep it family-friendly too. At The Commons, kids are running around while music’s going, people are posted up with food and drinks, and there’s usually a game of cornhole going.

It’s pretty normal to bring the kids along and still feel like you’re out on the town!

FIND YOUR RHYTHM
There’s a bit of a formula to it, you just make it your own. With so much going on, it’s easy to find plans that fit the kind of feeling you’re after.

Whether it’s a girls’ weekend, something family-friendly, or a solo trip to get outside and unplug, you’ll find your version of a good time here.

Adults talk on outdoor picnic benches in the sun with bicycles resting in the foreground and food trucks in the background at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds to celebrate Chico Wildfest.
