Weekend Wonderland: 48 Hours of City Comfort & Mountain Escapes in Chico

(Originally published )

Chico is the ideal winter basecamp for travelers who want variety without the hassle.

From a lively downtown with an outdoor ice rink to nearby mountain escapes, this weekend itinerary shows how to experience two seasons in one weekend getaway.

Day 1: City Comforts, Downtown Energy

Start with Handcrafted Warmth

The perfect place to kick off your winter getaway is right in downtown Chico. We have two favorite spots for handcrafted coffee and cocoa:

Naked Lounge: If you are looking for something more cozy and laid-back, head to Naked Lounge.

This cafe has been part of the Chico coffee scene since the early 2000s and is well-frequented by the creative community. You might even catch local musicians strumming guitars outside while you enjoy your drink.

Stoble Coffee: This is a wonderful place to cozy up. You can grab a cup of hot coffee and settle next to the outdoor fire pits on their rooftop patio, or if you prefer to be fully indoors, their two-story interior has plenty of comfy seating to sink into.

Discover the Heart of Chico

The community shows up every week to celebrate and support local farmers and makers at the Chico Saturday Farmers Market. Be sure to stop by the Camina booth for a sweet treat. Their pastries are made with organic ingredients and stone milled flours whenever possible.

While you are there, browse the fresh winter produce, like vibrant kale and seasonal greens, from vendors such as Burns Blossom Farm.

Treat Yourself: Downtown Shopping

Take some time after the market to roam downtown and find your own "treat yourself" moment. Downtown Chico is home to so many amazing small businesses who specialize in local flair and handmade goods.

From Little Red Hen to Bidwell Clothing Company, there is always something unique to take home as a memento.

Sunset Hike on a Mild Afternoon

Chico’s mild winter makes it easy to acquire the right layers to make a hike easy and comfortable. One of the best trails to tackle is Monkey Face

This local favorite can get crowded during the spring and summer, so winter is the perfect time to see the green hills and perhaps even spot some mushroom friends along the way.

Dinner on a Heated Patio

In Chico, winter does not mean giving up outdoor dining. Head back downtown in time for dinner on a patio. Heated patios allow you to stay warm while still enjoying the fresh evening air.

The RawBar’s patio is especially popular, offering a cozy place to settle in while watching the lively energy of the plaza and the skaters just steps away at the ice rink.

A Night Out for Arts and Entertainment

To close out your day, Chico offers plenty of inviting evening options:

For something cozy and classic, catch a film at the historic Pageant Theatre, known for its independent and arthouse programming.

If you are in the mood for more energy, head to the Senator Theatre for live music and touring performances.

Enjoy a major show at Laxson Auditorium, which is home to Chico Performances and visiting Broadway productions.

For a more laid-back finish, settle into a downtown bar for a late-night drink and live music, such as the Funky Functions night at Duffy’s Bar.

Whatever you choose to do, there is always something happening in town. For a full lineup of what’s on, visit our dedicated events page, Butte 365.

And if you are visiting during the holidays, be sure to check out our holiday events page for seasonal happenings and festive experiences.

Day 2: Morning Snow Play, Evening Skating

Fuel Up Before You Head Up

To start off your second morning in town, grab some breakfast downtown to fuel up for a snow day near Butte Meadows.

B Street downtown has the best biscuits and gravy, and their warm ambiance makes for the perfect morning. Grab a cup of hot coffee to warm up; they serve locally roasted Daycamp coffee right there in town.

Drive the Scenic Route to the Snow

Next, it’s time for your high-country escape! Drive up Highway 32. This is not just a commute; the gorgeous drive takes you higher in elevation and feels incredibly picturesque. You'll quickly find a perfect white winter escape just about 45 minutes away.

The areas around Butte Meadows and Jonesville are great spots for snow shoeing, snow play, snow angels, sledding, or whatever you and your family want to get into. There are tons of ways to explore the snowy trails.

Authentic Lunch at the Mountain Bar

If you want a true local mountain experience, hit the Bambi Inn for Lunch. This hole-in-the-wall spot is a well-known favorite up in the hills (and in the valley) and serves classic bar food.

You can settle in for famous Bambi burgers and enjoy the classic dive ambiance. You’ll likely see plenty of bikers and locals enjoying the warmth.
